Now the constellation Orion rises higher in the night sky. This is a beautiful constellation probably know by many of you with its characteristic appearance. This constellation contains many interesting objects. Here I will talk about two of these as a matter of life and death in the universe. First, we have giant star Betelgeuse, which is about 600 light years away. This supergiant star of more than 1000 times that of our Sun, shines with a brightness that is 50,000 times stronger than the Sun. Betelgeuse is in the final stages of his life and will eventually become a supernova, its life ends in a huge explosion, one of the most violent events in the universe. Betelgeuse is the star that shines brightly in the upper left of the constellation. Another interesting object is the Orion Nebula (M42), which is located directly below Orion's belt. Its center is a real nursery where new stars are born. This nebula is clearly visible in an ordinary pair of binoculars. Right now here in northern Sweden, Orion due south at 1 am at night, so go out and enjoy this beautiful constellation.
